What we have outlined so far in this chapter and elsewhere in the book are approaches that construct studentcentred learning within the institution, although such approaches do not necessarily preclude links to the outside world (such as when students may visit experts in the context of PBL). But there are student-centred learning approaches that have an explicitly external focus. We shall give two examples of these here. Students-as-consultants is an attempt to develop student-centred learning at the same time as linking education with the world of work.

Such teachers, who describe their teaching as student-focused, are less likely to encourage surface learning approaches among their students. We strongly suggest you read the article by Trigwell, Prosser and Waterhouse to deepen your understanding of these important relationships. ) greater flexibility in learning and teaching relatively inflexible arrangements greater flexibility in assessment with self and peer assessment becoming more common assessment seen as the responsibility of the teacher with examinations as an important focus long-term perspective: emphasis on lifelong learning short-term perspective: emphasis on completing assigned work and learning for the examination If we are committed to the goal of lifelong learning, that is, intentional, focused learning carried on throughout life, then moving to student-centred learning is an essential process to help achieve this goal.

Carry out further cycles of the process if necessary. Preparing the problem-based learning modules You may be asked to prepare one or more of the PBL modules. Your first task will be to obtain the objectives, or more likely develop them yourself. at it is that the students should have achieved by the time they have completed the module. It is important at this stage to seek the involvement of teachers from all the disciplines that are expected to contribute to the learning outcome of the students.
